Every Alateen group needs an active, adult member of Al-Anon to serve as sponsor. The sponsor is an active part of the group, guiding and sharing knowledge of our Twelve Steps and Alateen Traditions.

Alateen Sponsors teach teens affected by someone else's drinking to:

-- share experience, strength and hope with each other
-- discuss their difficulties
-- learn effective ways to cope with their problems
-- encourage one another
-- help each other understand the principles of the Al-Anon program
-- learn how to use the Twelve Steps and Alateen's Twelve Traditions

Who will Area 16 Recognize as an Alateen Sponsor?

A recognized Alateen Sponsor is a responsible adult member of Al-Anon who attends An-Anon regularly and who shares his or her recovery experience gained through working the 12 Steps, 12 Traditions, and 12 Concepts.  He or she helps the Alateens to focus on the Al-Anon program.  It is in sharing recovery that we provide hope for the future.

Requirements for Sponsorship

A.Minimum age of 23.
B.Currently attending Al-Anon meetings and be an active Al-Anon member for at least 3 years.
C.Participating member of an An-Anon Home Group.
D.Cannot have any pending charges or past convictions for any type of crime involving a minor.
E.Require at least one sponsor per meeting, but recommend two.

Process:

1.Contact the District Representative and/or Area Alateen Coordinator and/or Area Alateen Process Person to let them know of your desire to sponsor a group and complete the necessary forms.

2.Provide to the District Representative and/or Area Alateen Coordinator and/or Area Alateen Process Person the names of two Home Group member references who are not related to the candidate. These references should be able to attest to your participation in the program, service experience, reliability, stability and dependability.
